5 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Spring

For those of us in colder climates during the winter months, spring is a joyous time to look forward to. The sun is out more often the birds sing their songs, flowers begin to bloom. The majority of us don't think about how to keep a healthy plumbing system unless you're a plumber. To The T Plumbing and Heating wants to share helpful tips to prepare for spring.

1. CHECK YOUR SUMP PUMP

You may be saying, "what is that?" or "why?" The answer, many basements flood as a result of snow melting. As the saying goes, "April showers" is due to heavy rains in April. If you live in Colorado as we do, that could mean any time of year. It pays to check that your basement is ready to handle the incoming water. To ensure your system is working properly, pour a bucket of water in the pit to activate the switch. Be sure to clear the line of any leaves or debris. Also, using a vinegar mixture through the pump can help eliminate any mold or mildew that may have built up over the winter.

2. CHECK YOUR BASEMENT PIPES

A leak in the basement can easily go unnoticed and cost up to thousands of dollars in damage. Make sure any exposed pipes in the basement, under sinks, or outside, are free from cracks or damage from freezing.

3. CHECK YOUR WATER HEATER

The maximum temperature should be no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit if it's hotter than recommended you will notice higher utility costs. Every 6-12 months you should maintain your water heater (check out our how to: water heater maintenance blog). Sediment buildup happens over time and you may need to consider replacing it. If your water heater is over 15 years old, you run the risk of it breaking down when you need it most.

4. INSTALL FLOOD ALARMS

Just like a smoke alarm, a flood alarm will sound when it meets water. To The T offers a system that will not only shut the water off but notify your phone of a leak. This can help avoid the potential for flooding and save you the costs of damages to your home and belongings.

5. CLEAN YOUR AC UNIT

During the winter, leaves, sticks, and all sorts of things can build up on your air conditioning unit. This restricts airflow and causes performance issues. To clean, first, turn off the power to your unit and vacuum the fins with a soft brush, they’re weak and can bend easily, so be gentle. Cut grass or other vegetation growing around it, and remove any debris.

BONUS TIP: CLEAN YOUR RETURN AIR VENTS

As air passes through your vents dust and dirt you never noticed can build up. Vacuum the loose debris, and use a rag to get the tough spots. The quality of your indoor air will rise, and your family will thank you!

As the saying goes, "a clean home is a happy home" this applies more to your plumbing and heating than you realize. Do these steps recommended by To The T Plumbing & Heating and you'll stay happy! From our family to yours!
